Require Rigor in Their Thinking and Responses

Again, by modeling, demonstrating, and calling attention to the rigors of good thinking, kids begin to mimic the behaviors and wind up reasoning their way through various situations that occur in the course of their class work. When teachers model logical, deductive thinking; when they label the inductive thinking skills of taking specific information and moving to concepts that can be generalized; when teachers respond thoughtfully to student queries and demonstrate their steps to solving problems; and when teachers are mindful and thoughtful in all their interactions, students adopt those very same behaviors. Teachers must not be afraid to require rigor. It is in the best interest of their young learners.
